New Technique to Deal with Core Beliefs

A new technique of cognitive therapy, referred to as the “Trial” and inspired by Kafka, has been proposed by Professor Irismar Reis de Oliveira to deal with core beliefs.  A short paper describing this technique was recently published in the newsletter of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Please, click here to read it.  The full paper published in the Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria may be accessed here. For training purposes, please, send an email to irismar@ntcba.com.br.

The first issue of the International Journal of Cognitive Therapy has just been published and is available free of charge.  Click here to read.

Workshops with international guest speakers

Donna Sudak, Associate Professor at Drexel University, Philadelphia, conducted a workshop on “Cognitive Therapy for Depression and Anxiety” in Salvador, as a guest of the NTCBA, in the afternoon and evening of March 27 and in the morning and afternoon of March 28, 2008.  Simultaneous translation into Portuguese was available throughout this 16-hour workshop, which was held at the Vila Galé Hotel, Ondina.  There were participants from most states of Brazil.

The International Symposium on the Epidemiology and Prevention of Suicide, was held immediately following the workshop on the evening of Friday, March 28, and in the morning and afternoon of Saturday, March 29. Howard Sudak (University of Pensilvania) and Mario Juruena (Institute of Psychiatry of London) were the main guest speakers from abroad. Although the program is in Portuguese, you might be interested in knowing our guest speakers.

Specialization Course on Cognitive Therapy

New classes are scheduled for April, 2008 in Salvador and Maceió. An Advanced Specialization Course in Neuropsychology is planned to take place in May 2008 in Salvador.

New Books

Check out here the publication of the "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Clinicians" by Donna M. Sudak, guest speaker in the March 2008 segment of Cognitive Therapy. This book is now also available in Portuguese by Artmed.

Another book, "Learning Cognitive-Behavior Therapy: an Illustrated Guide", by Jesse Wright, Monica Basco and Michel Thase, was also published recently in Brazil by Artmed (click here). Jesse Wright is the guest speaker of the NTCBA in the January 2009 segment of Cognitive Therapy.

Artmed has also published the Portuguese translation of Robert Leahy’s best-seller “The Worry Cure: Seven Steps to Stop Worry from Stopping You”. The NTCBA contributed to this translation in the form of supervision and technical review.  The volume is an excellent therapeutic aid for patients with generalized anxiety disorder and other types of anxiety disorder.

Sites of Interest

Keep up to date with the Beck Institute blog.

Robert Leahy has started a blog on anxiety. His hope is that it will eventually help people become more familiar with anxiety and with CBT.

Christine Padesky’s site provides some interesting reading.  It is worthwhile consulting the Clinical Corner session, where various publications are available.

It is also worthwhile checking out the forum on cognitive therapy on the Behavior Online site, coordinated by James Pretzer.

Read Judith Beck’s interview in Primary Psychiatry.  It provides definitions and clear ideas on the nature and objectives of cognitive therapy.

NTCBA at the World Congress!

The World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (WCBCT) took place from 11 to 14 July, 2007, in Barcelona.  The NTCBA participated and proposed a new technique for dealing with core beliefs using an analogy to a legal trial, inspired by Kafka’s novel “The Trial”.  This study [Trial-Based Thought Record (TBTR): A strategy for dealing with core beliefs by combining sentence reversion and the use of an analogy with Law] was presented by the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the Federal University of Bahia and founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, Professor Irismar Reis de Oliveira.

See Beck’s interview!

See an interview with Aaron Beck (the father of cognitive therapy), Eric Kandel (winner of the Nobel Prize for his work on memory), Steven Roose (Professor at Columbia University) and Peter Fonagy (psychoanalyst and author of “What Works for Whom”?) about the legacy of Freud.

Here is an interesting video on automatic thoughts and cognitive restructuring.
